A shoulder-to-waist ratio of about 1.618 to 1 — shoulder circumference at its widest, divided by waist circumference at its narrowest. Also called the Adonis index. What the number means

These are descriptive bands, not medical categories, and they assume a relaxed measurement. Frame width, clavicle length and hip structure all set limits that no amount of training changes — two people can train identically and land a full band apart.

Where 1.618 came from

The golden ratio is a mathematical constant, roughly 1.618, that turns up in geometry and has been used as a compositional device in art and architecture for centuries. Applying it to the human body came later — it was mapped onto proportions people already found attractive, rather than discovered by measuring what works.

That order matters. It's an aesthetic convention, not a biological law. Nobody established through research that 1.618 specifically is optimal; it's a tidy number attached to an observation that was already obvious — broad shoulders over a narrow waist read as athletic.

Which doesn't make it useless. It's a genuinely good shorthand, it's measurable, and it points at something real. Just don't treat missing it by 0.1 as a verdict on your physique.

How to actually move it

Only two things change the ratio, and most people pick the wrong one first.

What doesn't work is direct oblique training with heavy loads, which can thicken the waist slightly — the opposite of the goal. And no amount of ab work narrows a waist; that's a body fat and structure question.

Ratio isn't the whole picture

A good ratio with little muscle underneath still reads as small — you can have a 1.6 taper at a very low bodyweight and simply look narrow rather than impressive. Proportion tells you how the pieces relate; it says nothing about how much there is.
