Is 25 FFMI really the natural limit?
Where the number came from
In 1995, Kouri and colleagues published a study comparing the fat-free mass index of male athletes who used anabolic steroids against those who didn't. The drug-free group clustered below an FFMI of roughly 25, while the steroid-using group frequently exceeded it.
That's the entire origin of the number. It has since been repeated so many times that it's often stated as though it were a law of physiology — but what the study reported was a pattern in one sample of people, measured once, in the mid-nineties.
Which doesn't make it useless. As a rough reference for what drug-free training tends to produce, it holds up reasonably well, and it's a genuinely helpful sanity check against the physiques sold as natural online. The problem is what people do with it next.
What it can't tell you
The common misuse is treating 25 as a test: this person is above it, therefore they're using something. That reasoning doesn't survive contact with how the number is produced.
- A group average can't classify an individual. Finding that most drug-free lifters fall below a line says nothing definitive about any specific person above it. Distributions have tails, and people at the tail are exactly who ends up competing.
- It depends entirely on a body fat estimate. FFMI is calculated from fat-free mass, which is calculated from body fat percentage — a number almost nobody measures accurately. See below for how much that moves things.
- Height distorts it. Lean mass doesn't scale with height squared, so raw FFMI quietly favours taller lifters. The normalization adjustment exists precisely because of this, and plenty of published FFMI figures don't apply it.
- Genetic variation is real and large. Frame width, muscle belly length and insertion points all change how much lean mass a body carries at the same height.
How much a bad body fat guess moves it
This is the part that undermines most confident FFMI arguments. Take an 85 kg lifter at 1.80 m and change only the body fat estimate:
Same person, same weight, same height — and the FFMI swings by more than three points purely on the body fat figure you feed it. Being wrong by five percentage points on body fat is completely ordinary when people are eyeballing it, and that's more than enough to move someone across the line in either direction.
Which is why an argument that rests on someone's FFMI usually rests, underneath, on a stranger's guess about their body fat.

Getting the input right
Everything above points at the same weak link: the body fat percentage you type in. If it's a guess, your FFMI is a guess with extra steps.
